Benjamin Williams Leader RA 1831 – 1923 was a prolific and highly successful landscape artist. Coincidentally, John Constable was said to have visited Benjamin’s father in Worcester when Benjamin was a boy. His name at that time was Benjamin Leader Williams, but when he arrived at the Academy School, there were three other Williams and he accordingly changed his name by deed poll to separate himself from the crowd; a very worldly move for an artist.
At the peak of his career, B W Leader’s work took landscape painting into the modern age without reference to Impressionism. His art was based on simplicity and a lack of pretension, which took huge talent to achieve, and which made him a favourite with the crowds at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions.
This site details much of his life, but its primary function is to show his paintings and consequently add to the millions of fans he has already.
